Having benches at home is very common for
people. However, what if you can have a bench which can also be your storage
system? The answer for that is to have a cubby bench. This kind of bench is
very interesting because it has a plain simple look and doesn’t require a wide
space since it is usually put in the entrance of a house. You can say that a
cubby bench is like a horizontal version of shelves. So, instead of having many
rows for storing, cubby bench has multi columns. It is made of wood and you can
paint it with your own desirable color that match the theme in your home. For
entry cubby bench, you can add baskets in each column so you can store shoes or
other stuffs more neatly. Cubby bench can also be placed near the wide window
in any room. For this, you can add pillows on the cubby bench to make it more
comfortable to sit.

Cubby bench is very simple to make. You need
to buy 2 sheets of 4’x8’ with ¾” width, 2 or 3 8’ primed trim boards, 1 panel
of laminated board, ¾” trim piece, lattice board, wood glue, nail gun with
various lengths of nails, wood screws, primer, semi-gloss paint, wood fill, and
baskets. The first thing to do is to make the horizontal shelves. You need to
make two rectangular cuts from the board which has the same length, and four
square cuts which have the same size. Then, attach the cuts by using wood glue.
Nail the corner of each board and also the line where you put your board
divider. After the main shelves are ready, you can add layers on each side. You
can put trim on each edge and attach laminated board for the top. For
finishing, you can paint your cubby bench and add basket in each shelf.

The main material for making cubby bench is
wood. However, which wood suits the project best? The answer is pine wood. Pine
wood makes the furniture blends well with other types of materials. In case you
want to leave the cubby bench unpainted, the color of pine wood is neutral and
can blend well with many colors and wallpapers. For budget project, pine wood is
also a good choice since it is much less expensive compared to other types of
wood.
